Applications and for Models 18/ 40 and Reiner!

bulletPulp and Paper

Pfaudler electrodes can be used in most applications in the production of all types and grades of paper. The electrode can be used in the following list of applications. The Reiner electrode can be used for applications where the pH is below the minimum for the model 18 electrode. The Reiner electrode can be used down to 0.00 pH.

Headbox, Stuffbox, Stock Blending, Machine Chest, Stock Washers, Tray Water, Biocide Control, Repulping, Deinking, 1st Stage Caustic, 2nd Stage Caustic, Bleaching, Bleach Removal and others. Non paper processes in the mill are Clarifier and Wastewater applications. The electrodes may be left dry and need not be removed during process shutdown or acid/ caustic boil outs and seldom need to be recalibrated.

Pfaudler model 18 /40 electrodes used for pH and pH compensated ORP (see section on "Theory" for more information) significantly improve the confidence given to the measurements, provide lower maintenance and replacement costs, provide better process control, a higher quality product and better return on your investment. When properly mounted in pulp or stock lines removal for cleaning is not routine.  We have an application on a headbox that required cleaning the conventional electrode after each shift that was completely eliminated by the Pfaudler electrode. The Reiner electrode can be used for classical pH, Classical ORP and pH compensated ORP.

bulletPharmaceutical/ Biotechnology

Pfaudler 18 pH electrodes can radically lower the replacement cost of pH electrodes used in fermenter applications. Processes where steam sterilization is the primary source of cleaning normally require replacing the electrodes every 3 to 10 sterilization cycles. They also need to be removed between batches, cleaned, stored wet, calibrated before the batch and grab sample adjusted during the run. This procedure is maintenance intensive and critical to obtain a measurement.

The Pfaudler Model 18 and Reiner electrodes can be placed in the fermenter and not removed. Steam sterilization does not limit the life of the electrode. It actually rejuvenates the electrode! We have applications at Merck and Lilly where electrodes were not removed from the fermenter for over two years and when removed showed no sign of wear. Typical life in these SIP applications can be many years!

Storing the electrode dry does not affect the electrode. Since the electrode is one-point buffer calibrated, it does not need to be removed for calibration. Independent testing by pharmaceutical users has shown that the Pfaudler electrode has better repeatability, responds faster in the later stages of the fermentation cycle and is not affected by organic solvents.

Applications where acid and caustic CIP cleaners are used have a small effect on wear and tare but generally last several years depending on the actual concentration of the cleaners and the time at elevated temperature. Typical applications are fermentation, separation, precipitation, purification and bio-waste disposal.

bulletChemical Reactions

Typical products of chemical reactions are emulsions, precipitating solids, contain organic solvents, have high organic/ water concentrations, have varying or high pressure or have high viscosity. Any or all these situations can coat the typical low impedance reference junction, poison the reference junction or diffuse into the reference junction. The result seen by the operator is "Drift", high maintenance and frequent electrode replacement. The Reiner with its pressurized flowing reference electro9de is recommended for applications below 4 pH.

The Pfaudler model 18 / 40's unique high impedance reference electrode has no open junctions to coat, foul or be poisoned by diffusion. The high impedance glass permits the electrode to perform with much more fouling than any conventional electrode. Typical cleaning cycle improvement can be from 20 to 100 times better than the best conventional electrodes. Pfaudler electrodes have better repeatability, respond faster in all stages of chemical reactions, work at very low or high temperature and are not affected by organic solvents. The Reiner with its pressurized flowing reference electrode is recommended for applications below 4 pH.

bulletBrewing

Pfaudler electrodes have been widely used in brewing processes. Applications include Hot Wort, Cold Wort, Heat Exchanger Leakage and Filling. The electrode can withstand the normal caustic and acid cleaners used in the industry. The Reiner with its pressurized flowing reference electrode is recommended for filling line applications where acid incursion could take the process below 4 pH.

The most noticeable benefits are: The electrodes remain in-place without the need to be removed between batches or shutdown for cleaning and calibration, fostering a high confidence level and reduced maintenance. Electrode stability and repeatability generally out perform most of the laboratory electrodes that are used to check their operation.

bulletHeat Exchangers

Heat exchangers provide a significant opportunity for using the unique Pfaudler technology. The application presents several problems for conventional pH electrodes. They need to operate on both sides of the exchanger and detect small leaks of the cooling fluid into the process stream. They need to be very stable to eliminate any false alarms. They need to be able to be calibrated in buffer at room temperature and then operate in a different process medium at widely different temperatures. The normal variations between pH electrodes their affect by uneven coating, fouling, poisoning and junction potentials limit the response to small pH deviations.

The Pfaudler electrodes "Hallmark" is stability. It has a high impedance glass reference in place of the porous reference junction and is not affected by coating, fouling, poisoning and junction potentials. The Pfaudler model 18 electrode is calibrated in the process solution at the process temperature, eliminating any temperature errors. The result of using two Pfaudler pH electrodes across a heat exchanger will provide the most accurate and dependable measurement for any chemical incursion into the process.

bulletLow Temperature Applications

Low temperature applications are very difficult for conventional pH electrodes. Low temperatures can freeze the internal solutions in the measuring and reference electrodes and cause breakage. The best last chance for conventional electrodes is to add glycol to the internal fill solutions. This helps but is still very limited; because the response of conventional electrodes at low temperature is normally very slow. Add a typical process solution with lower ionic strength than the calibration buffer and the response is much slower. If there are any organic solvents or elevated viscosity, the response lag is even greater.

The Pfaudler model 18 / 40 electrodes have no internal solutions to freeze. It has a high impedance glass reference in place of the porous reference junction and is not affected by coating, fouling, poisoning and junction potentials. The Pfaudler electrodes are calibrated in the process solution at the process temperature, eliminating any temperature errors or need to be removed for maintenance or calibration.

bulletWaste Treatment

Waste treatment is generally considered an easy measurement that can be made with low cost pH electrodes. There are many industrial applications where the low cost electrodes work; however they may need a significant amount of cleaning, calibration and frequent replacement to keep the process under proper control. The problem in these situations is fouling of the low impedance reference junction, poisoning the reference junction or process diffusion into the reference junction causing the electrode to Drift! The result is: a low initial cost and a very high  operating cost. The Reiner with its pressurized flowing reference electrode is recommended for applications below 4 pH.

Since the Pfaudler model 18 /40 dual high impedance electrode has a very large smooth ceramic type surface, any normal build up of process coating will usually not be enough to require frequent cleaning or recalibration.  We have some bio-waste applications where the best conventional electrodes require cleaning every 3 days. In this application the Pfaudler electrode can go 60-80 days with out being cleaned. The typical range of improvement can be to  lengthen the time between cleaning by 10 to 50 times. Since there are no junctions or internal solutions recalibration is also very infrequent.

Since the electrode has no open junctions, the electrode can be left dry during process shutdowns eliminating the need to remove the electrode and  keep it wet to prevent serious and permanent damage. The result is better process measurement, tighter control and lower maintenance cost.
